On July 3, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Parliament of Ghana during his official visit to the West African nation. This visit marked a significant moment in India-Ghana relations as both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership. The speech delivered by PM Modi was not only a reflection of the deepening bilateral ties but also an affirmation of India’s role in Africa’s development and the growing influence of India globally.

India-Ghana Relations: A Longstanding Partnership

India and Ghana have shared a history of cooperation that spans decades, with both nations working closely on a range of global and regional issues. From trade to development cooperation, education, and sustainable development, their partnership has been mutually beneficial. During his visit, PM Modi highlighted that India considers itself a co-traveller in Ghana’s development journey. He also emphasized India’s commitment to working with African nations to address challenges such as climate change, poverty, and education.

In his address to the Ghanaian Parliament, PM Modi reiterated that India and Ghana aim to double their trade in the next five years. This ambitious target reflects the growing economic cooperation between the two countries and underscores India’s desire to contribute to the prosperity of African nations. The focus on trade, combined with increased investments and development assistance, highlights the evolving nature of the relationship.

India as a Co-Traveller in Ghana’s Development Journey

PM Modi expressed that India’s approach to development cooperation with Ghana is not just about investing but also about empowering Ghana’s people. “Our objective is not just to invest, but to empower,” he said, stressing that India’s role is centered on building local capacities and creating sustainable opportunities in Ghana. This cooperative relationship aims to create long-term partnerships that will benefit the people of both nations for generations to come.

India’s commitment to Ghana’s development is also seen in India’s support of Africa’s Agenda 2063, which seeks to build a sustainable and prosperous future for the continent. Africa’s goals, according to PM Modi, are India’s priorities, and both nations are united in their pursuit of shared growth and progress.

A Shared Vision for the Global South

One of the key points of PM Modi’s address was the need for the Global South to have a stronger voice in global decision-making processes. He emphasized that the post-war global order is rapidly changing and that Africa—along with other nations from the Global South—must be empowered to contribute more actively to addressing global crises such as climate change, pandemics, terrorism, and cybersecurity.

“Progress cannot come without giving voice to the Global South,” PM Modi stated, highlighting India’s belief that the global governance structures must adapt to the changing geopolitical realities. India has been at the forefront of advocating for Africa’s rightful place at global platforms, and this was showcased when the African Union became a permanent member of the G-20 during India’s G-20 presidency.

India has consistently worked with the Global South to address issues like climate change, sustainable development, and healthcare. PM Modi reiterated India’s belief in the philosophy of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” which encapsulates India’s vision for global cooperation and mutual progress.

Key Moments of the Visit: Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

During his visit, PM Modi was honored with The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the highest national honor of Ghana, in recognition of his distinguished leadership and contribution to global diplomacy. This gesture not only underscores the growing esteem between the two nations but also reflects India’s leadership role in international politics and its efforts to bridge gaps between developing nations.

The Prime Minister also had the opportunity to address the Indian diaspora at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast in Ghana, strengthening the cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Ghana. His address resonated with the Indian community, reinforcing India’s commitment to their well-being and success abroad.

Global Achievements and Technological Milestones

PM Modi further elaborated on India’s technological advancements, highlighting how India has emerged as a global innovation hub. From India’s Chandrayaan mission landing on the moon’s south pole to its growing leadership in space exploration and technology, India has been making strides on the world stage. He shared that India now has the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem, and Indian women are leading in fields such as science, aviation, and sports.

“India’s accomplishments in space and science are tied to Africa’s future,” he said. India’s successful missions, such as the Chandrayaan mission and the presence of an Indian astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS), demonstrate the deep ties between India and the rest of the world, including Africa.

India’s Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, PM Modi emphasized that India’s economic trajectory is heading towards becoming the third-largest economy globally. The country’s economic reforms, strong governance, and commitment to sustainable development are the pillars upon which India is building its future. He also expressed his confidence that India’s growth will continue to benefit the Global South, with the country contributing nearly 16% to global growth.

India’s focus on green energy, including initiatives like the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Global Biofuel Alliance, reflects its commitment to a sustainable and inclusive future. PM Modi reiterated that India’s Mission Life aims to combat climate change and promote environmentally sustainable living, aligning with Africa’s development goals.

PM Modi’s address in Ghana’s Parliament was not only a reflection of India’s global vision but also a commitment to supporting Africa’s growth. As the two countries continue to build on their strong foundations, the partnership promises to provide long-term benefits for both India and Ghana. Through enhanced trade, investment, and collaboration on global issues, the India-Ghana relationship is poised for continued success.

With India’s support, Ghana is positioned to achieve its development goals, and both countries can work together to tackle global challenges. As India’s role in Africa grows, so too does its influence on the global stage. This visit marked another milestone in India-Ghana relations, one that will serve as a foundation for decades of friendship and mutual progress.
